An oral-history video series
Real Voices
Drawn Out
Real testimony. Illustrated where photographs were never taken.
01
A face, a place, a detail remembered
Why these stories
Some histories were kept only by the people who lived them.
Real Voices Drawn Out records the memories of families shaped by Cold War displacement. Each conversation begins with listening: the rooms, roads, voices, and ordinary details that official records could not hold.
Those memories become a filmed oral history, accompanied by original illustrations based on the storyteller’s own descriptions. The result is not a reconstruction. It is a careful visual companion to a person’s account.

Embracing memory
The image begins with what you remember.
A missing photograph does not mean a missing story. We ask about the texture of a coat, the shape of a doorway, the slope of a village street. An illustrator listens for these details and draws alongside the testimony.
Memory can be partial, layered, and deeply personal. We do not ask it to behave like a document. We give it room to speak in its own way.
“Our memory is not new. The technology is.”
How a conversation works
You remain in control of the pace.
There is no need to prepare a formal account. We will explain each step, answer your questions, and begin only when you feel ready.
01
We begin with a private, unrecorded conversation.
02
You decide what memories you would like to share.
03
We arrange a time and place that feels comfortable.
04
Illustrations are made from the details you remember.
05
You see the finished story before it is shared.
Housing the archive
A record made to last beyond the episode.
These conversations are being gathered as a community archive, a place where families can hear voices too often left outside the written record.
The series will first live on The Buried Record YouTube channel. As it grows, we intend to place the collected interviews with an appropriate cultural or research institution, where they can remain accessible to future generations.

About The Buried Record
The Buried Record is a YouTube channel about histories that were never properly documented. We tell them through narrated, illustrated videos, built from the sources that do exist and, now, from the people who lived them. Real Voices Drawn Out is the part of the channel where those people speak for themselves.

Do you remember going to a photobooth? The curtain, the stool, the flash—who was standing beside you when the strip came out?
